Entire Career of Salary Insufficient for UK Workers to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Says

Per new analysis, the median worker in the UK would need 52 years' worth of income to achieve the financial standing of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Growing Wealth Gap Over Time

The study examined net worth data covering the recent health crisis years and found that during 2006-08, it would have needed 38 years' worth of average worker salary to enter the wealthiest decile of the wealth distribution.

A research lead involved with the report commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a typical full-time employee accumulating their complete salary during their working years would still not be able to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The study found that the gap between the wealth of the average person and an individual in the richest segment was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had widened to £1.3 million in actual value by 2020-22.

The researcher further stated: "These disparities are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is restricted – those who commence life wealthy tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the economic divide growing in actual numbers, the share of total wealth in the UK held by the richest households – termed "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the study.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from three times the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

Termed "automatic" increases, via rising house prices and variations in superannuation evaluations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, according to the report.

These appreciations tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – worsening the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in real terms, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Variations

Additionally, there were pronounced area-based disparities, with the median value of wealth in the pandemic period amounting to £290,000 in the SE of England, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, compared with £110k in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were covered under the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the information reveals countless homes were able to save, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families achieved superior outcomes, however. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the median home in the top income bracket saw their available funds grow by 4,200 pounds," the report finds.
