EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
