Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
