The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
