The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's communication:
Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the input to consideration and revamped the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following a period of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His management and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to continue seeing the development of the game in the time to come.
David
Background of the Incoming Head
Brinkman currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, the developers portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch reads. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, risks, and challenges that change every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and trust your team can secure victory? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos lacks an official release date or consoles, but players can expect more updates as creation advances.
